Corticosteroids ("steroids") such as prednisone and prednisolone are frequently used when treating allergic dogs and cats. While chronic steroid use has many potential side effects that can harm your pet, using low doses for short periods of time can be done safely without long term harm to Molly. However, whenever possible, natural alternatives would be better choices to help control her itchy skin. Here are some suggestions taken from my book The Allergy Solution for Dogs (Prima, 2000.)

Acupuncture
Acupuncture can be used to reducing itching or stimulate the pet's immune system. The number of acupuncture treatments that a pet will require varies, but usually owners are asked to commit to 8 treatments (2-3/wk) to assess if acupuncture will work. If the pet improves, acupuncture is done "as needed" to control the pet's signs.
Homeopathy
Homeopathy uses extremely dilute substances to treat the pet. There is no one right remedy, and a thorough examination, history, and laboratory tests must be performed to assist the homeopathic veterinarian in selecting the correct remedy or remedies. The following remedies may be helpful:Sulfur, Apis. Mel., Rhus. Tox., Urtica, and Arsenicum Album.
Nutritional Supplements
For pets with allergies, supplementation with super green foods, enzymes, omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil,) antioxidants, and whole food glandular products can be effective. I don't usually use any one supplements but combine several to help improve the pet's nutritional health, relieve pain, inflammation, and itching. See my list of recommended supplement companies.
Antioxidants
Certain vitamins (A, C, and E) and minerals (selenium) can act as antioxidants. By increasing the level of natural vitamin and mineral antioxidants, we may be able to prevent decrease inflammation, pain, and itching.
Topical Decontamination
The most important therapy for pets with allergies is frequent bathing with hypoallergenic shampoos, such as those containing aloe vera and oatmeal. I recommend bathing at least 2-3 times per week for maintenance, and sometimes daily bathing for pets with severe allergies.

Dog arthritis is a common, painful condition that affects one out of five adult dogs- more than eight million in all. Although there are no miracle cures, much can be done to make old dogs with arthritis more comfortable and improve their lives.
Most large dogs develop canine arthritis as they age. Although there are no miracle cures, much can be done to make old dogs with arthritis more comfortable and improve their lives.
Dog arthritis occurs when joint cartilage begins to split and fragment. The first signs might include stiffness, lagging behind on walks, or perhaps difficulty jumping up. Often, these signs are mistaken as part of the natural aging process however, the real cause is usually arthritis.

Unfortunately, because our pets can't tell us if and where they hurt, it can be difficult to know that our pet is in pain and not just "getting older". Dog arthritis is one such ailment that can cause pain resulting in changes in behavior. The key is to recognize changes in your pet's behavior and realize that medical intervention may often make a huge difference to bring your pet back to his old self.

Some signs of dog arthritis include:

Decreased activity

Reluctance to walk, run, climb stairs, jump or play

Stiffness

Limping

Difficulty rising from a resting position

Soreness when touched

Yelping or whimpering in pain

Acting aggressive or withdrawn

Exhibiting other personality changes

If you notice any of these changes, see your veterinarian. The sooner the condition is recognized, the sooner your pet can be helped.

If you suspect your dog may be beginning to suffer with arthritis make visit your veterinarian to identify what's causing your pet's discomfort. If arthritis is the problem, your veterinarian can recommend the best treatment option for your dog's condition, such as:

There are dozens of products for animals intended to relieve Dog arthritis by promoting joint and cartilage health. Their use has become nearly universal among veterinarians, no safety problems have arisen, and they are generally quite effective. Many vets say that every dog showing even the earliest signs of Dog arthritis should be receiving one of these products. They work best in the early stages of arthritis, while there is still reasonable joint function left to preserve.

Medications can soothe your arthritic pet a resort quality of life to your dog.

Rimadyl is a new non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug given in tablet form and labeled specifically for dogs, and is effective in relieving pain and inflammation safely, even for dog arthritis long-term use.

Weight-loss/exercise program.

Taking off excess weight will help decrease stress on affected joints, while moderate exercise can help prevent decreased joint function.

Diet change

Your veterinarian may recommend a diet specially designed to meet your pet's needs, such as Eukanuba Senior Plus, or Hill's G/D

Soft comfortable place to sleep

Your dog's bed should be as comfortable as your own. An old mattress or soft couch is excellent. Soft foam rubber at least four inches thick is good. Scout around for an old baby mattress

Gentle, regular exercise

Provide limited, gentle exercise. Once around the block two or three times a day is about right. Avoid strenuous activity on the weekends alternating with little or none during the week

Surgery

In severe cases, your veterinarian may recommend surgery to address such abnormalities as hip dysplasia

Your dog will rely on you to keep him in good health. A proper diet, regular exercise and grooming, and routine check-ups at the veterinarian will help keep your dog in top form.

It's also important for you to get to know your dog's habits - eating, drinking, sleeping, and so forth - since sometimes a variation in those habits can be an indication that he isn't feeling well.
A good pet care plan can help with the cost of providing quality healthcare throughout your dog's life. As vet bills for dog health care in later years can be very expensive.
If you dog does become ill then it is important to give him the best medication.
Health tips and symptoms

Skin

Healthy skin is flexible and smooth, without scabs, growths, white flakes, or red areas. It ranges in color from pale pink to brown or black depending on the breed. Spotted skin is normal, whether the dog has a spotted or solid coat.
Check your dog for fleas, ticks, lice, or other external parasites. To do this, blow gently on your dog's stomach or brush hair backward in a few places to see if any small specks scurry away or if ticks are clinging to the skin. Black "dirt" on your dog's skin or bedding may be a sign of flea droppings.

Coat

A healthy coat, whether short or long, is glossy and pliable, without dandruff, bald spots, or excessive oiliness.

Eyes

Bright and shiny eyes are an excellent sign of good dog health. Mucus and watery tears are normal but should be minimal and clear. The pink lining of the eyelids should not be inflamed, swollen, or have a yellow discharge.
The whites of your dog's eyes should not be yellowish. Eyelashes should not rub the eyeball.

Ears

The skin inside your dog's ears should be light pink and clean. There should be some yellow or brownish wax, but a large amount of wax or crust is abnormal. Poor dog health is shown by redness or swelling inside the ear. Your dog shouldn't scratch his ears or shake his head frequently. Dogs with long, hairy ears, need extra attention.
Nose

Most people assume that a shinny wet nose is a sign. A dog's nose is usually cool and moist. It can be black, pink, or self-colored (the same color as the coat), depending on the breed. Nasal discharge should be clear, never yellowish, thick, bubbly, or foul smelling. A cool, wet nose does not necessarily mean good dog health, and a dry, warm nose doesn't necessarily mean he's sick.

Mouth, Teeth and Gums

Healthy gums are important for dog health. They should be firm and pink, black, or spotted, just like the dog's skin. Young dogs have smooth white teeth that tend to darken with age. Puppies have 23 baby teeth and adults have around 42 permanent teeth, depending on the breed. As adult teeth come in, they push baby teeth out of the mouth.

To check your dog's mouth, talk to him gently, then put your hand over the muzzle and lift up the sides of his mouth. Check that adult teeth are coming in as they should, and not being crowded by baby teeth. Make sure the gums are healthy and the breath is not foul-smelling. Look for soft white matter or hard white, yellow, or brown matter. This is plaque or tartar and should be brushed away to keep your dog in good health.

Mouth infections can lead to serious problems in the gums and lead to poor dog health in other parts of the body, including the heart, so it's important to give your dog's teeth and mouth special attention.

Temperature

A dog's normal temperature is 101 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit (38.3 to 39.2 degrees Celsius). Taking a dog's temperature will tell you a lot about your dog's health.
To take your dog's temperature, you'll need a rectal thermometer. Put some petroleum jelly on the bulb of the thermometer. Ask someone to hold your dog's head while you lift his tail and insert the thermometer about an inch or so into the rectum. Do not let go of the thermometer. Hold it in until the temperature is read (about 3 minutes for a mercury thermometer), and then remove gently.

Heartbeat and Pulse

Because dogs come in a wide range of sizes, their heartbeats vary. The heart beat of an animal in good dog health will be from 50 to 130 times a minute when resting. Puppies and small dogs have faster speeds, and large dogs in top condition have slower heartbeats.

To check your dog's heartbeat, place your fingers over the left side of the chest, where you can feel the strongest beat.
To check the pulse, which is the same speed as the heartbeat, press gently on the inside of the top of the hind leg. There is an artery there and the skin is thin, so it's easy to feel the pulse.

Wee & poo!

Urine is a great indicator of a good health, and should be clear yellow. Most adult dogs have one or two bowel movements a day. Stools should be brown and firm. You can also check for worms. Runny, watery, or bloody stools, straining, or too much or too little urination warrant a call to the vet.

Weight

A healthy dog's weight is the result of the balance between diet and exercise. If he is getting enough nutritious food and exercise but still seems over- or underweight, he may have a health problem.
Don't let your dog get fat by giving him too many between-meal snacks; obese dogs often develop serious health problems. The best way to tell if your dog is overweight is to feel his rib-cage area. You should be able to feel the ribs below the surface of the skin without much padding.

If you let your dog get over weight or feed him the wrong thing then he will certainly suffer from poor dog health at some time.

And I want to do all I can to ensure that my treasured Tiki never has a recurrence of cancer. So for a while now, I’ve made a point of sprinkling turmeric over my dogs’ food every single day.

If you want to be hardcore about deriving the maximum nutritional benefit from turmeric, consider taking curcumin supplements yourself as well as administering them to your dog. Curcumin is also known as C.I. 75300, or Natural Yellow 3.

Most people probably think because they are dogs they can just naturally swim, not really true. We are putting in a pool this summer and one thing that i did was go online and look at dog life jackets.

Hello Everyone.

Sorry i have been on vacation put i'am back. I was sent a new product from a company called Terracycle and to let you all know they are an ECO FREINDLY BRAND!!
A few of the products they sent me to test was
1. STAIN AND ODOR REMOVER - Of course an all natural product that is safe on carpets, clothing, bedding, etc. . removes dirt to blood.

2. YARD ODOR REMOVER - I really loved this one just because i have lava rocks in the yard. try getting the smell off those. worked fantastic.... a must have!!

3. STOOL DESTROYER - You spray this directly onto the poop wait 24 to 48 hours to fully decompose. I find this perfect for smaller dogs. What i like about this product also is after you spray it on it takes away the smell of feces.

4. TRASH CAN PROTECTOR - Even though i don't live in the country and we don't have animal problems with our trash cans what i did like about this product was how nice our garbage cans smelled. We all know how garbage cans get really smelly after awhile. Love this one!!!

5. HARDWOOD FLOORS - This is a stain and odor remover for your hardwood floors. Okay what i like about this one is anyone who has hardwood floors knows you cannot put any kind of chemicals on them. You have to clean them with very, very little water and if you have animals that have had accidents on hardwood you will smell it no matter what after awhile. This product is chemical free. Made with water, minerals and essential oils. Cleans and smells fresh after using. Can also be used on marbles and tiles!!

I have info on this great company called care credit. I have it and i love it. What i love about it is that you can use it for yourself and your animals.
it is like a credit card and when you go to the site you can add in your area and try and see if there are any vets or doctors in your area that accept carecredit.They have no interest payment plans, extented payment plans. so you can choose. I was lucky because my vet whom i love accepts carecredit and if im running alittle low on cash towards the end of the month i know i have my card and can take my animals in if they need to be looked at and it is nice to have that option.

you can use this card for anything pertaining to health but i love that i can use it for my animals also.

Also remember that acetaminopen is in over 2oo perscriptions and over the counter too like tylenol, vicodin, lorcet, etc. it makes us feel better when we take it but one pill can kill a cat and can cause kidney failure and liver damage to your dogs so be real careful with your household meds. dogs are commonly posioned by ibuprofen which can be found in motrin, advil, midol, etc.

Dear dog and cats:

The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becomong your food and dish, nor do i find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designs by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Racing me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me dosen't help because i fall faster than you can run. I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think i will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort, however. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other, stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out on the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm. For the last time, THERE IS NO SECRET EXIT FROM THE BATHROOM! If, by some miracle, i beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meiow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge in an attempt to open the door. I must exit through the same door i entered. Also, i have been using the bathroom for years - cannine/feline attendance is not required.

The proper order for kissing is: Kiss me first, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough. Finally, in fairness, dear pets, i have posted the following message on the front door:

TO ALL NON PET OWNERS WHO VISIT AND LIKE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT OUR PETS.......

1. they live here, you don't

2. if you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. that's why the call it "fur" niture.

3. i like my pets alot better than i like most people

4. to you, thay are animals. to me, thay adopted sons/daughters who are short, hairy, walk on all fours and don't speak clearly.

REMEMBER, DOGS AND CATS ARE BETTER THAN KIDS BECAUSE THEY:

1. eat less

2. don't ask for money all the time

3. are easier to train

4. normally come when called

5. never ask to drive the car

6. don't hang out with drug using people

7. don't smoke or drink

8. don't want to wear your clothes

9. don't have to buy the latest fashions

10. don't need a gazillion dollars for college and if they get pregnant you can sell their children

Here is a great reciepe for granola for your doggies. i love to take a bag of granola with me when we are traveling in the car or going to the doggie park. It's just a great little snack and good for them too.

GRANOLA

3/4 cup honey
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp. vanilla
2 cups cracked wheat
2 1/2 cups rolled oats
2 cups bran flakes
1 cup wheat germ
1 cup of sunflower seeds
1 cup chopped roasted soybeans

Preheat oven to 325'
heat the honey, oil and vanilla in a pan. pour over all the remaining dry ingredients in a bowl. Mix thoroughly and spread on 2 greased baking sheets. Bake for 15 minutes or til nicely browned. Stir occasionally during baking to prevent over browning. cool and store in a sealed container

good morning i would like to share with you a a few treats that my mommy makes for us. she is busy this morning so i will be posting for her....

PEANUT BUTTER VANILLA BISCUITS

1 1/2 cups of water

1/2 cups oil

3 tbls. peanut butter

2 tsp. vanilla

2 cups of whole wheat flour

1/2 cup cornmeal

1/2 cup of oats

combine flour, cornmeal and oats in bowl. stir in oil, peanut butter, vanilla and water.

knead dough til smooth. add more flour or water if needed at this time.

roll dough out on floured surface and cut out with your fun shapes.

bake on greased cookie sheet at 400' for 20 minutes

BAD BREATH DOG TREAT

2 cups brown rice

1 tbls. activated charcoal. ( can get this at your healthfood stores. don't use grilling briquets )

3 tbls. canola oil

1 egg

1/2 cup fresh mint

1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley

2/3 cup lowfat milk

preheat oven to 400'. grease cookie sheet. combine the flour and charcoal. add all the other ingredients.drop spoonfuls on oiled cookie sheet about i inch apart. bake 20 minutes. store in a airtight container and keep in the fridge.

I love this toy.

It comes in three sizes and it cannot be destroyed, at least my dogs have not been able to break them and believe me they destroy toys fast. But this ball is fabulous. It does not open up so what you do is find the right size treat and put them in the ball thru the holes and hand it over.

As we all know summer will be here soon and looks like we might just be in for a hot one this year. so please remember to keep your water bowls full INSIDE and OUTSIDE too.

A great thing you can do for your dogs that is fun and keeps them happy and busy is a KONG TOY

Here is a fun tip.......

i like to put peanut butter inside them and then freeze them. Then on warm days i give them to my dogs and they play with them and cools them off at the same time .

mom is too smart ;)

You know how you go into these doggie stores and they are selling chicken or beef flavored toothpaste for your dogs.... HELLO. that's like someone giving us ground up hamburger to brush our teeth with, yuck!!!.... i can't even imagine that.
PLEASE stick with the mint or peppermint flavors your dog will love you for it.

hello everyone here is a wonderful breakfast treat for your babies.......

SPINACH BAGELS

3 cups of whole wheat flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 cup of frozen spinach
1 tsp. vegetable oil
1 cup water

preheat oven to 350'
in a bowl combine flour, baking powder and baking soda
next stir in spinach. next stir in oil and water. making a dough
roll bits of the dough into balls about 1-2 inches in diameter.
poke a hole through each ball with the end of a wooden spoon
bake on an oiled cookie sheet for 45 to 50 minutes
serve up with peanut butter or just plain

ENGLISH IVY - upset tummy, hyperactivity, laboured breath, drooling, fever, thirst increase, pupils dilating and staggering

FICUS - upset stomache, irratated skin

JASMINE - convulsions, death

PHILODENDRON ( DEVILS IVY ) - upset tummy, convulsions, asphyxiation, death

APPLE ( leaves & stems ) - shock, mouth inflammation, rapid increase in breathing

APRICOT, ALMOND & PEACH - diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pains

OLEANDER - whole plant is toxic. causes pain in oral cavity, nausea and vomiting

INDOOR:

ASPARAGUS FERN - vomiting, kidney failure, tremors, abdominal pains, respiratory problems

ALOE VERA - diarrhea

My first blog will be introducing you first to my babies and they would like to also share a receipe for a treat to all their furry friends......

APPLE CINNAMON TREAT

1 c. applesauce

1 tsp. cinnamon

1 tbl. parsley

1 c. cold water

1/2 c. veg. oil

5 c. flour

1/2 c. powdered milk

2 large eggs

DIRECTIONS:

preheat oven to 350'. combine all ingredients in a bowl. roll out and cut into fun shapes. bake for 20 to 25 minutes

Remember that besides tasting good cinnamon has many health benefits to animal too.

It is an anti inflammatory.... good for dogs with arthritis

Regulates blood sugars.... good for diabetic dogs

It improves digestion. helps with circulation and upset tummies too.

and it is a natural food perservative so treats will last longer and that is always a good thing ;)
